Summer Employment Opportunity

This opportunity is available to students if they are 17 or older.

Position: Field Research Technician (2 positions available)

Duration: Approximately mid-May to mid-August

Job Description: The job will primarily consist of fieldwork conducted on forage and invasive species research trials at the Center. The research involves comparing different species and varieties of warm and cool season grasses, legumes, and brassicas. Duties will include: assisting forage agronomist, research specialist, and other personnel in seeding and maintaining of forage plots, weed control in plots through herbicide application and hand weeding, hand clipping select species in invasive species plots, monitoring field plots systematically, measureing plant phenology, collecting forage and soil samples, repairing and maintaining facilities and equipment, mowing and maintenance of research plots, using balance to weigh forage samples, data entry and processing, and other various duties as assigned.

Qualifications: Must have ability to pay close attention to detail, tolerate repetitive work, work independently or in a group, be mature and responsible, work outdoors in various weather conditions, and be able to lift 50-100 pound. At times this position will involve strenuous work such as kneeling, stooping, crouching and bending for extended periods which requrie a level of physical fitness. Candidate should be eager to gain experience and should show strong interest in working in the field to control weeds, to identify plant species using vegitative characteristics, knowledge of plant taxonomy and an interest in plant ecology and forage research. Experience with the use of standard and research based agricultural equipment such as: feeder, harvester, lawn mower, and other machines are strongly preferred but not required. Driver license is required.

Salary: $10.00
